I graduated from the University of South Alabama, where I earned my bachelor’s degree and played college basketball. I went on to Florida State University for my master’s degree in Sports Management, and before I ever wrote a loan, I built my foundation on a basketball court.
I moved into coaching from there, starting as a graduate assistant at Florida State, taking over as head coach at Miami Dade College, and later coaching as an assistant at Louisiana Monroe. Between playing and coaching, I’ve been part of 4 NCAA Tournament appearances and 1 NIT appearance, experiences that taught me what it takes to perform when the stakes are high. That run shaped how I work today, listening first, building a plan around the person in front of me, and staying steady when things get complicated.
I’ve been licensed in mortgage lending since 2018, spending years as a broker and branch manager before founding The Herd Lending in January 2025. Today, we’re licensed in Florida, Texas, Georgia, and Virginia, helping homebuyers with everything from first-time purchases to VA loans, DSCR investment financing, and bank statement loans for the self-employed.
Outside the office, I’m a husband and father of four. Family is why I do this work the way I do, with the same patience, teamwork, and honesty I’d want someone showing my own.
Whether you’re buying, refinancing, or just trying to figure out what’s possible, my team and I would love to help.
Jamy Smith has built a career around building businesses, growing teams, and learning one important lesson along the way: the right people can solve just about anything. The wrong people can turn a Tuesday into a very long week.
As VP of Growth & People at The Herd Lending, Jamy leads Marketing, Talent Acquisition, and Human Resources—which is a fancy way of saying he helps find great people, gives them reasons to stay, and makes sure plenty of customers know who The Herd is.
His career has been anything but one-dimensional. Jamy has served as a Chief People Officer, led national recruiting and staffing operations, built talent programs supporting some of the country’s largest companies, managed teams and P&Ls, helped organizations navigate rapid growth, and spent years leading People & Culture for a high-growth independent insurance organization. He’s worked everywhere from startups to global companies, which has taught him that businesses of every size tend to wrestle with the same basic questions: How do we grow? How do we find great people? And how do we keep the wheels on while we’re doing it?
At The Herd, Jamy brings all of those experiences together. He’s passionate about building a company people are proud to work for, a brand customers genuinely connect with, and a culture where people can do great work without taking themselves too seriously.
His philosophy is simple: take care of your people, take care of your customers, keep getting better, and have some fun along the way.
After all, a strong herd isn’t built by following the crowd.
